The right cleaning interval depends largely on what is being burned and the combustion gases passing through the tubes. Clean fuels such as natural gas leave very little behind, while sources like waste or wood chips produce soot and ash much faster, causing deposits to build up more quickly. As a general guideline, most firetube boilers benefit from cleaning every 6 to 8 weeks, but the ideal frequency varies with the fuel source, load, and operating conditions. A practical way to judge timing is to watch for rising stack temperatures and increasing fuel consumption, both of which indicate that fouling is starting to reduce efficiency.

This depends on several factors: the hardness of the deposits, whether any tubes are fully blocked, and the number and length of the tubes. With soft deposits, a typical tube of 6 to 8 meters can usually be cleaned in around a minute. When harder deposits or fully blocked tubes are involved, more time is needed to break through and reopen them, including switching between tools – in those cases, a 6 to 8 meter tube may take anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes. Total job time therefore scales with the number of tubes and the severity of the fouling.

For severe deposits inside the tubes, Goodway Benelux recommends a two-step cleaning process. First, the bulk of the deposits is removed with flex hub scraper tools. Nylon abrasive brushes are then used to clear any remaining fouling and provide a light polishing effect, ensuring optimal results.

To clean boiler firetubes correctly, you need a tube cleaning machine, a flexible shaft for dry tube cleaning, heavy-duty tools to remove hard deposits and open blocked tubes, and cleaning brushes. A powerful vacuum with accessories can also be added to remove loosened soot and scale at the same time, ensuring a thorough and complete cleaning.

Mechanical cleaning is generally safe for boiler firetubes, thanks to their greater wall thickness and stronger tube materials. After selling hundreds of boiler tube cleaning packages and training customers on site, Goodway Benelux has never received a complaint about tube scratching after cleaning.

Yes. All Goodway® tube cleaners are equipped with water couplings for wet tube cleaning and can also be used for dry operation.

To select the correct brush size, first determine the tube’s inner diameter accurately. Then choose a brush that stays in continuous contact with the tube wall, which usually means a slightly oversized brush. Nylon abrasive brushes are generally sized slightly larger to maximize contact and remove hardened deposits effectively.

Tube cleaning brushes and tools have different lifespans, depending on factors such as the type and severity of fouling, tube length, and tube material. As a rough estimate, nylon abrasive brushes last around 20–40 tubes per brush, while tools such as the flex hub last considerably longer. For these tools, it is important to replace the blades once they become blunt or less effective. Always monitor performance after each tube to determine whether a brush or tool needs replacing.

Yes. A full cool-down is mandatory before boiler tube cleaning, both for safety reasons (including lockout/tagout) and to protect your equipment. Your cleaning tools also have temperature limits: nylon abrasive brushes should not exceed 80 °C, while black cleaning shafts can withstand up to 149 °C. Since the lowest limit governs, the system should be cooled below 80 °C before cleaning to prevent tool damage.

Although Goodway® offers specialized equipment for hazardous locations, such as certain industrial vacuums, the standard boiler tube cleaning machines are not ATEX-certified. For use in an ATEX zone, you must select a model that is explicitly certified for the specific hazard classification.
