Evaporative condenser cleaning

Goodway Benelux provides chemical cleaning-in-place systems and products for removing scale, rust, and biofouling on the outer tube sides of evaporative condensers. Goodway® ScaleBreak descaling products are circulated through the system, effectively removing deposits with ease.

Advantages
  • Safe chemical descaling products
ScaleBreak descalers offer excellent cleaning results and speed without compromising the long-term integrity of equipment base metals. This also includes galvanized steel which is often used for evaporative condensers.
  • Easy cleaning-in-place process
The existing pump of the evaporative condenser can be used to circulate the ScaleBreak descaler throughout the system, eliminating the need for additional pumping equipment and reducing overall costs.
  • Online cleaning process - no downtime
ScaleBreak descaler can be added directly to the water basin during operation, allowing the evaporative condenser to remain online and eliminating downtime during cleaning.
  • Reduce corrosion risk due to fouling
Under-deposit corrosion often occurs beneath layers of scale or biofouling. By performing a chemical cleaning-in-place (CIP) of the tubes, these deposits can be removed in time - preventing corrosion from developing.

More about evaporative condenser cleaning

Evaporative condensers are used across a wide range of industries and applications. Goodway® chemical cleaning systems and descalers are specifically designed to remove various types of deposits from the outer tube surfaces. In general, these solutions are most effective against deposits such as scale (calcium carbonate), rust, and biological fouling.

For evaporative condensers, Goodway® ScaleBreak-MP descaler is used. This multi-purpose, biodegradable solution effectively removes scale without damaging the base metals of the tubes. It is also suitable for galvanized steel, which is commonly used in these systems.

Traditionally, scale deposits on tube bundles are often removed using high-pressure cleaners or aggressive chemicals, which can damage the galvanized steel layer. This increases the risk of corrosion, shortens the equipment’s lifespan, and may lead to costly replacements. By using safe descalers like Goodway® ScaleBreak-MP, these risks are minimized while ensuring thorough scale removal.

"At one of our district heating plants, we had three evaporative condensers that were completely scaled up. We contacted Goodway Benelux, who recommended a chemical cleaning process using their ScaleBreak-MP descaler. In total, they supplied 19,000 litres of ScaleBreak-MP to remove scale and biological deposits. In early 2025, we carried out multiple circulation processes using ScaleBreak-MP and successfully removed the majority of deposits from the condensers. The water is now once again in direct contact with the metal surfaces, and evaporation rates have significantly improved, making the cleaning process highly successful!

Cleaning-in-place and the benefits

Goodway® equipment operates using the cleaning-in-place (CIP) method. This approach requires minimal disassembly, saving manpower, reducing downtime, and lowering overall costs. During cleaning, ScaleBreak descaler is added to the water basin and circulated throughout the system and over the tube bundle using the condenser’s own pump.

  • Reduced downtime: CIP enables cleaning with little disassembly of the heat exchanger, minimizing system downtime. With evaporative condensers, the cleaning can even be carried out online which results in virtually no downtime.
  • Lower labor costs: CIP typically requires less labor, as there is no need to manually clean each component or reassemble the equipment, reducing overall labor costs.
  • Increased safety: With no disassembly required, CIP lowers the risk of damaging equipment or exposing workers to hazardous materials, making it a safer cleaning method.
  • Consistency and effectiveness: ScaleBreak descaling solutions efficiently remove scale, fouling, and other deposits from heat exchanger surfaces, delivering consistent results without the variability associated with manual cleaning.
