The Goodway® PSM-500 drilling system is an air-powered device designed for cleaning straight, small diameter heat exchanger tubes. It is particularly effective for removing heavy deposits or opening clogged tubes.

PSM-500 drilling system

The PSM-500 air-powered drilling system is designed for quick and efficient cleaning of straight, small-diameter tubes, such as those found in small heat exchangers, lube oil coolers, and similar applications.

Compact yet powerful, this system can effortlessly remove light deposits and open tubes blocked with hard deposits. The PSM-500 uses hollow drill shafts, allowing water to flow directly to the cutting head, which flushes out deposits as they are loosened, ensuring faster and more effective cleaning.

When to use

The PSM-500 drilling system is engineered for small-diameter tubes with hard deposits. Cleaning these tubes can be challenging with rotary or mechanical systems, as the required thin shafts are fragile and prone to breaking under high-torsion tools. The PSM-500 provides an ideal solution.

  • Tube inner diameters between 6,4 and 25,4 millimeters
  • Tube lengths up to 2 – 2,5 meters (depending on access from one or both sides)
  • Use with water flush for effective debris removal
  • Cleaning capability: remove light to medium-hard deposits with brushes or tools
  • Special application: open fully clogged tubes using hollow drills

2-step cleaning process

When hard waterformed deposits, such as calcium carbonate, completely block heat exchanger tubes, the Goodway® PSM-500 drilling system is the ideal tool to restore flow capacity. While the PSM-500 reopens the tubes, it does not fully clean the internal surfaces. For optimal results, a two-step cleaning process is recommended.

  • Step 1: Use the PSM-500 drilling system, along with drill rods, to remove blockages and restore the flow capacity of the tubes. This step clears the way for efficient circulation in the next stage.
  • Step 2: Once the tubes are open, connect a Goodway® chemical cleaning pump system to circulate ScaleBreak descaling solutions. This will thoroughly dissolve any remaining waterformed deposits on the tube walls.

By implementing this two-step process, you ensure the heat exchanger is completely cleaned, enabling it to return to optimal operational performance.

Practical information

The PSM-500 drilling system is supplied without accessories or a carrying case. To operate the system, appropriate accessories are required. Goodway Benelux recommends the following:

  • Hollow shafts: Connectable shafts that can be linked together to extend the total length. Cleaning brushes or tools can be attached to these shafts.
  • Hollow drills: Solid, one-piece drilling rods with integrated drill heads. The length is fixed and cannot be extended.

The PSM-500 is powered by compressed air. As with all air-powered systems, the motor must be lubricated during use to ensure proper operation. It is also recommended to supply clean, filtered air. For this purpose, Goodway Benelux offers the GTC-705-4 air lubrication and filtration device, which is not included as standard with the PSM-500.

During an outage we discovered problems with one of our shell-and-tube heat exchangers which had several tubes fully blocked. By using the Goodway® PSM-500 drilling tool, we were able to open up more than 75% of the blocked tubes in a short timespan of just a few hours.
