Air handling units (AHU)

Air handling units are essential to modern ventilation systems, ensuring clean, conditioned air circulates throughout buildings. During normal operation, AHUs accumulate dust, microbial growth, and other contaminants on coils, filters, fans, and ductwork. This buildup restricts airflow, reduces efficiency, and increases energy use. Regular cleaning and maintenance are crucial to preserve indoor air quality, maintain performance, and extend equipment life.

Fouling issues of air handling unit coils

Air handling units contain multiple components – such as coils, filters, fans, and drain pans – that are susceptible to fouling during normal operation. When contaminants accumulate on the coil surfaces, airflow is restricted and heat‑exchange efficiency drops. This reduction in performance forces the system to work harder, increasing energy consumption and compromising indoor air quality.

  • Coil fouling buildup: Dust, pollen, moisture, and microbial growth settle on coil fins, gradually forming a dense layer that restricts airflow and reduces heat transfer efficiency.
  • System design and environment influence fouling rate: AHUs draw in large volumes of air, and units located near industrial zones, urban traffic, or high‑pollution areas will experience faster fouling accumulation on their coils.

Note: While AHUs have several areas where fouling can occur, Goodway® solutions are specifically designed for coil cleaning, ensuring optimal airflow and thermal performance at the coil level.

Effects of fouling in air handling unit coils

Fouling on AHU coils can significantly impact system performance and indoor air quality. When dust, moisture, and organic debris accumulate on the coil fins, airflow is restricted and heat transfer efficiency drops. This forces the system to work harder, increasing energy use and operational strain. Below are some of the most common effects:

  • Reduced heat transfer efficiency: Fouling forms an insulating layer on the coil fins, limiting heat exchange and reducing the unit’s ability to condition air effectively.
  • Increased energy consumption: As airflow and heat transfer decline, fans and other components must work harder to maintain performance, driving up energy usage and operating costs.
  • Decline in indoor air quality: Deposits trapped on the coils can contribute to microbial growth, which may circulate through the system and negatively affect air quality.
  • Shortened equipment lifespan: The added mechanical and thermal stress caused by fouled coils accelerates wear on system components, leading to more frequent maintenance and reduced overall lifespan.

Improve air handling unit efficiency

Keeping the coils of air handling units clean is crucial to maintain a highly efficienct system. Goodway Benelux offers special (low-pressure) cleaning equipment which can be safely used to remove deposit buildup on coils. By adding a special cleaning product, coils can even be degreased, leading to even better cleaning results.

  • Low-pressure: Goodway® equipment operates at just 30 bar of pressure, ensuring that delicate coils cannot be damaged, even if the spray angle is not correct.
  • High waterflow: Goodway® equipment operates at 12 liters per minute of waterflow, which is nearly twice the flow of regular high pressure cleaning systems. The high waterflow ensures all deposits are completely flushed out of the coils during cleaning.
  • Biodegradable cleaners: Goodway® cleaning product is added to the cleaning to further increase the results. Goodway® ‘Coilshine’ not only removes deposits, but also degreases the coils.

Goodway® coil cleaning equipment is often used at large maritime vessels, such as cruise ships, for the cleaning of their air handling unit coils.
