Absorption chillers

Absorption chillers are critical components in industrial cooling and process systems, providing efficient temperature control using steam, hot water, or waste heat. Over time, the generator, absorber, condenser, and evaporator tubes in these systems will accumulate fouling from organic deposits, scaling, corrosion by‑products, and other types of deposits from the lithium bromide solution and cooling water. This buildup will reduce heat‑transfer efficiency, increase energy consumption, and strain overall system performance. Regular and preventive tube cleaning is essential to keep absorption chillers operating at peak efficiency.

Fouling issues in absorption chiller tubes

In most applications, water-cooled chillers are connected to an open-loop cooling tower, providing a reliable cooling solution for buildings or industrial processes. Because these systems operate as an open loop, fouling buildup naturally forms during operation.

Deposits entering the cooling tower travel throughout the system and attach to surfaces where heat transfer occurs, making heat exchanger tubes particularly susceptible to fouling. Over time, this buildup reduces heat transfer efficiency, lowers system performance and increases energy consumption.

Commonly found deposit types in absorption chiller tubes are:

  • Silt, mud
  • Algae
  • Biological growth (biofilm)
  • Rust (corrosion)
  • Scaling (calcium carbonate)
  • Crystallized salts

Effects of fouling in absorption chiller tubes

When heat‑exchange tubes inside an absorption chiller become fouled, the system’s heat‑transfer efficiency is significantly reduced. Below, you can find some of the key effects of fouling in these components.

  • Reduced heat‑transfer rate: Fouling creates an insulating layer on the tube surfaces, restricting the transfer of heat between the lithium bromide solution, chilled water, and cooling water circuits. This reduces the overall heat‑transfer rate, as deposits such as crystallized salts, scale, corrosion residues, or organic material increase thermal resistance.
  • Increased energy consumption: As heat transfer declines, the absorption chiller must operate under higher thermal load to achieve the same cooling output. This often results in increased energy consumption from auxiliary equipment such as solution pumps, cooling tower fans, and hot‑water or steam supply systems that must compensate for the reduced efficiency.
  • Shorter equipment lifespan: Persistent fouling increases operational stress on the chiller, leading to higher solution pump workload, elevated temperatures, and greater pressure drops. These conditions accelerate wear on tubes and internal components, resulting in more frequent maintenance, higher repair costs, and a shorter overall equipment lifespan.
  • Corrosion and damage: Certain types of fouling – especially scale, sludge, or biological growth – can promote localized corrosion on tube surfaces. Over time, this corrosion weakens the tubes, increasing the risk of leaks, lithium bromide contamination, or vacuum loss, all of which can lead to costly downtime and repairs.

Improve absorption chiller efficiency

Cleaning absorption chiller tubes is a crucial activity to maintain a highly efficient system. Goodway Benelux offers two (2) types of cleaning solutions for removing fouling within the heat exchanger tubes. Based on the application, type of deposit, and accessibility, one of the two systems will provide the most effective solution

  • Mechanical cleaning with rotating brushes: Ideal for removing commonly found soft to medium deposits inside absorption chiller tubes, such as silt, mud, algae, biological growth, light rust, and scaling.
  • Chemical cleaning-in-place: Designed for removing rust, crystallized deposits, and hard scaling inside the tubes. A descaling agent is circulated through the system for a controlled period, effectively dissolving and removing the buildup.
